Attack (Part One)

What are the differences between Impairment and Disability?

Since promoting the MY disABILITIES Book Project, I met some people to talk about the difference between Impairment and Disability. These two terms seem having the same meaning to many people, but there are differences if we think deeply.

“Generally speaking, impairment is the actual condition, while a disability is the restriction of ability caused by the condition. …”

Both the terms ‘disability’ and ‘impairment’ are used in the field of Disability Studies. Disability is any restriction related to an individual’s physical and mental functioning of a body part; whereas, Impairment is a condition where there is a complete or partial loss of any part or organ of a body.

As I have more restrictions, I am an easier target to be “attacked”?
